Hua Yan, style name Qiuyue, was from Shanghang in Fujian province. He studied painting in Hangzhou where he learned the academic style of the Song dynasty, and shortly went to Peking where he passed an examination and got a minor post in the northern border region. He returned to Hangzhou already one year later and dedicated his life to painting, travelling between Hangzhou and Suzhou. He was a kind of scholarly professional painter who excelled in many styles, also in the academic landscape painting as this fine composition shows.
